COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

Mh Tahfizul Quran is a tahfiz school for Ronghigyan kids operated in a single storey blue coloured house located at Jalan Chenderuh 4, Taman Bamboo Batu 4, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur. This tahfiz school is funded by donations, and they learn about religion, Malay language, English, science, maths and other basic literacy skills. This school has about 84 students and half of them accommodate in the house whereas the rest live with their parents. One of the Ustaz of the school said that the children face many challenges in education, living undocumented, lacking of facilities and many more.

When we first visit Mh Tahfiz School, the children were all lining up outside of the house while holding plates, queueing up to wash their own dishes. Then, about 2-3 of them took out the mop and mop the floor and cleaned up the area they had their meal, and prepared praying mats to perform their prayers. When they saw us coming, some of them quickly took out chairs for us to sit while waiting for them to perform their prayers. We were welcomed by one of their teacher, Ustaz Abdullah. We then introduced ourselves and explained why we were there and he was grateful and pleasant to spend his time for an interview session for us to know more details about MhTahfizul Quran School.

Ustaz Abdullah explained the needs of those children and how they educate them to become a better person. He invited us to walk around the areas in the house. We looked around the house and it was really stuffy. There are no proper storage for the children’s clothes, shoes, and other personal belongings. They sleep on the floor with pillows however it is still not enough that they have to share.  They don’t have a proper classroom as the house is too small to provide proper areas for education purposes. Where they eat is where they pray and where they study. Although they are lacking of a lot of things, it was touching to see how they embraced life and cared for each other despite how little they have. They just looked so happy in the house where there’s a sense of togetherness in them.

After observing and discussing, we decided to design a modular furniture where they can put their belongings and also for them to study as they were all studying on the floor. We went back and started to list out all issues and try to focus on minimizing it. Then, we came out with a design proposal and explained to the teachers and children of the school regarding our intentions. They were looking forward to see the outcomes.

We measured the house to see and analyse how many units can be installed to solve their issues while considering the space and areas in the house so that the design does not took up too much space although it is modular and detachable.

We went back to Mh Tahfizul Quran School to test our design and see how it works for those children. We only made one set of prototype to test it out. We brought in the prototype model and they were all so excited and curious to see what it was. We briefly explained and demonstrated the uses of the model.

We were glad that they loved it! They used it well and it helps them to have a better posture while studying. They explored and played with the furniture as it is modular and integrative. This indirectly helped them to explore the different use of the furniture based on their needs and creativity. We were so happy to see them filled with excitements.

In conclusion, the whole project gained a new experience for me and my group members. It showed us how to be grateful for what we have and always learn to share and care about others. We also learned how to communicate and interact with a different community and racial. It was a very heart-warming experience to help them throughout this whole journey together.
